Waste Li-ion volumes are growing faster than the capacity to process them
The electrification of transport and energy storage is creating a rapidly growing stream of end-of-life batteries. Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 sets binding targets for collection, recycling efficiency and the recovery of lithium, cobalt, nickel and other critical raw materials from waste batteries. Discarded batteries carry a real risk of fire and contamination, while the raw materials inside them go unrecovered.
The Burg Machinery answer
A closed loop with 14,000 tonnes of annual capacity across NMC, NCA, LFP and LCO chemistries — from collection at your site to clean materials returned to industry.

Technology, safety and a closed loop
Eco-friendly
Our eco-friendly recycling technology saves 8.1 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of recycled batteries, compared to the primary extraction of the raw materials.
Safety
Safe storage, handling and transportation of lithium-ion batteries is our priority. Safety is ensured by specially designed packaging and discharge to 0 volts.
Efficiency
Highest purity grades due to the low-temperature process; solvents of the electrolyte and lithium can also be returned to the material cycle. Black mass at over 99% purity.
Closed loop
Burg Machinery is committed to achieving complete autonomy in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries by implementing a fully closed-loop system.
R4 is the permit that makes recycling possible
Most Bulgarian waste permits cover only R12 (exchange) and R13 (storage) — accepting waste and passing it on. Ours includes R4 on the battery and accumulator codes, which authorises us to genuinely recover metals and metal compounds from lithium-ion batteries at our own facility.

Permits and certifications
Our operations are carried out under two permits in force, issued by the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water.
Waste treatment permit
02-ДО-00000568-01
Authorises the recovery, exchange and storage of 96 waste codes at the Kameno production field — including R4 metal recycling for batteries and accumulators.
- Waste codes
- 96
- Issued
- 15/05/2025
Waste transport registration document
11-РД-00000444-01
Authorises the transport of 105 waste codes, including every category of battery and accumulator and hazardous components.
- Waste codes
- 105
- Issued
- 14/05/2026
The permit includes operation R4 — recycling and reclamation of metals and metal compounds — on 8 waste codes, including “Other batteries and accumulators” (16 06 05). This is the operation that authorises genuine recycling rather than storage and forwarding alone.
